Your otoplasty journey begins with a consultation with Dr. Fardad. He will carefully assess your ears, discuss your aesthetic or functional concerns, and review your goals. Dr. Fardad will develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs, including the procedure, anesthesia, and recovery details.
The Ideal Candidate
Otoplasty is suitable for individuals as young as 5 to 7 years of age as long as the ears are nearly fully developed. Adults of any age can also benefit from the procedure if they are healthy and have realistic expectations. The most common cosmetic and functional needs among patients are:
- Correcting protruding or asymmetrical ears.
- Addressing sagging ear lobes due to wearing heavy earrings.
- Repairing torn earlobes.
The Procedure
Otoplasty typically lasts 1–2 hours and is performed as an outpatient procedure. Key steps include:
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia ensures comfort during the surgery.
- Incisions: Discreet incisions are made on the back of the ear or within natural creases to minimize visible scarring.
- Reshaping and Positioning: Excess cartilage and skin are removed or reshaped, and the ear is secured in its new position with permanent sutures.
- Closure: The incisions are closed, and protective bandages are applied to support healing.
Recovery
After the procedure, we provide detailed aftercare instructions for a smooth recovery process. The recovery is fairly simple and straightforward. During the recovery, there will be mild to moderate swelling, associated with typically minimal discomfort. As part of routine postoperative instructions, you will wear a supportive band over your ears and have physical activity restrictions for the first few weeks.
