Body Hair Transplantation: Beard, Chest, and More
Body hair plays a significant role in aesthetics, masculinity, and personal confidence. Whether due to genetics, trauma, surgery, hormonal imbalances, or previous hair removal, patchy or sparse facial and body hair can affect one’s self-image.
Body hair transplantation offers a permanent and natural-looking solution by carefully relocating healthy hair follicles from donor areas—typically the back or sides of the scalp—to the beard, chest, abdomen, shoulders, or other targeted regions.
Your Consultation
Your personalized consultation with Dr. Forouzanpour begins with an in-depth discussion of your goals, concerns, and medical history. The doctor will assess your donor hair availability, evaluate the condition of the recipient area, and recommend the most suitable transplant technique. Lifestyle factors such as smoking and medications will be reviewed to ensure optimal results. Pre-procedure guidelines will be provided to prepare you for a smooth and successful treatment.
The Ideal Candidate
A body hair transplant may be suitable if you:
- Is at least 18 years old
- Is in good overall health
- Have realistic expectations about the results
- Have adequate donor hair (typically from the scalp or other body parts)
- Desire fuller facial or body hair in specific areas
- Do not have active skin or autoimmune conditions affecting the donor or recipient areas
The Procedure
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
- Individual hair follicles are gently extracted from the donor area using a precision micro-punch tool.
- The follicles are then implanted in the desired body area—commonly the beard, chest, shoulders, or abdomen—ensuring proper angling and density for natural appearance.
- This minimally invasive approach results in tiny, virtually undetectable scars and supports quicker healing.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
- A narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp is removed and dissected into individual follicular grafts.
- The grafts are strategically placed in the recipient area to match natural growth patterns.
- Though FUT leaves a linear scar at the donor site, it allows for harvesting a larger number of grafts in a single session, ideal for extensive coverage needs.
Note: Hair transplanted from the scalp retains its growth characteristics, which may require periodic grooming and trimming to match surrounding body hair.
Recovery
- Mild redness, swelling, or tenderness in both donor and recipient sites may occur, typically resolving within 3–5 days.
- Tiny scabs may form around grafts and naturally shed within 7–10 days.
- Transplanted hair may initially shed within 2–4 weeks before entering a regrowth phase over the next few months.
- Noticeable regrowth usually starts around 3–4 months post-procedure, with full results visible by 9–12 months.
- Normal activities can resume after a week, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for 2–3 weeks to promote optimal healing.
have a question?
Body Hair Transplantation: Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure typically takes 4 to 8 hours, depending on the size of the area being treated and the number of grafts required.
Is the procedure painful?
Discomfort is minimal due to the use of local anesthesia and a mild sedative. You may experience mild soreness or tightness post-procedure, which usually subsides within a day or two.
What areas can be treated with body hair transplantation?
Common treatment areas include the beard, mustache, chest, abdomen, shoulders, arms, and pubic region. Transplants can be customized to suit your aesthetic goals.
Are the results permanent?
Yes. Transplanted hair follicles are typically permanent and will continue to grow hair for a lifetime. However, some grooming or trimming may be needed depending on the hair’s growth characteristics.
What are the possible side effects?
Temporary redness, swelling, or minor scabbing at both donor and recipient sites is normal. Some patients may experience folliculitis or initial shedding of transplanted hair (“shock loss”), which typically resolves on its own.
Will the transplanted hair match the texture of existing body hair?
Because the hair is often taken from the scalp, it may be finer or grow faster than native body hair. Over time, many patients find that it blends naturally or can be groomed for uniformity.
Can this procedure be combined with other treatments?
Yes. Some patients combine body hair transplantation with other aesthetic treatments or PRP therapy to enhance follicle growth and improve healing.
